TOP NEWS

"Austin sued after reclaiming land from 170 property owners" via AAS – Roughly 170 property owners near Bee Caves Armory say Austin wrongly pulled their land back under the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction after previously confirming it had been released.

Now they're asking a federal judge to stop the city from enforcing that decision.

A lawsuit filed June 5 by Property Owners Withstanding ETJ Retractions and the Schoenstatt Movement of Austin challenges Austin's March decision to void previously approved releases from the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, or ETJ — the unincorporated area outside city limits where Austin can still regulate some development and land use.

The plaintiffs argue the city had no legal authority to reverse releases it had already approved, in some cases months or years earlier, and did so without notice, a hearing or an opportunity to appeal. (AAS)

"From tall grass to trash cans, Austin-area residents sound off on HOAs" via AAS – Austin-area residents have mixed feelings about their homeowners' associations, the power — or lack thereof — they wield and the rules and regulations they enforce.

HOAs, formally known in Texas law as property owners associations, are governed by boards made up of neighborhood property owners. They establish and enforce rules for homes and residents within a community, and homeowners are often required to join and pay dues.

While HOAs are common across Texas, they are not regulated by the state. Their rules and enforcement practices can vary widely depending on board leadership and whether a management company oversees day-to-day operations.

The American-Statesman asked Austin-area residents on the neighborhood social media platform Nextdoor how they feel about their HOAs. Responses revealed a wide range of experiences. (AAS)

"Deep Eddy Pool reopens. What Austin swimmers need to know about recent repairs" via AAS – Deep Eddy Pool is open again after being closed from June 22-28 for repairs to a fill inlet valve that broke earlier this year. The mechanism helps ensure the pool fills in time for morning openings. Deep Eddy is one of the many public pools open around Austin.

Deep Eddy Pool is a spring-fed swimming hole with water that maintains a year-round temperature of 68 to 70 degrees. It includes a 10-lane, 100-foot-long lap pool and a 1-acre wading pool.

Before the pool was built, people swam, camped and picnicked at a beach named for a swirling eddy created by a huge rock jutting into the river. The rock was later blasted away. Businessman A.J. Eilers bought the beach in 1916 and built what became the first outdoor concrete swimming pool in Texas. He later added summer rental cottages.

“Deep Eddy quickly grew into as much carnival ground as swimming pool,” according to a 2012 American-Statesman article. “A diving baby (who was really more of a toddler), a man dubbed “the Human Fish,” who ate a banana while sitting underwater, and the Great Lorena and her Diving Horse, who plunged off a wooden ramp into a canvas-lined tank 30 feet below, performed regularly.” (AAS)

"Where to see Fourth of July fireworks in Austin and Central Texas" via AAS – Thousands filled the lawn at Auditorium Shores for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display in downtown Austin, Texas.

One of the year's most wholesome traditions is back this week, ready to make you feel like you own the night — like the Fourth of July, as Katy Perry reminds us.

The City of Austin and the Austin Symphony Orchestra will once again bring one of the city's biggest Independence Day traditions to Auditorium Shores on Saturday for the July 4 Concert & Fireworks Celebration.

This year's festivities mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, making Austin's celebration part of a nationwide commemoration of the country's semiquincentennial. (AAS)

"Fatal crash closes SH 130 after 18-wheeler plunges from overpass" via AAS – A fatal two-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler that went over the side of an overpass and landed on State Highway 130 near University Boulevard and Chandler Road in Williamson County closed all southbound lanes of the highway Monday, authorities said.

First responders were called about 12:51 p.m. to the crash at Chandler Road and the State Highway 130 frontage road, a junction that leads to an overpass above the highway, DPS said. According to the agency’s preliminary account, an Audi SUV was turning left when it collided with the 18-wheeler, sending the rig over the side and down onto SH 130’s southbound main lanes.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene. The Audi was occupied by an adult and two children, who were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

All southbound lanes of State Highway 130 were closed following the crash, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Round Rock police said eastbound traffic was being diverted to southbound County Road 110. (AAS)
