"Some Austin police officers earn double pay thanks to overtime" Austin American-Statesman's Austin Sanders – Most people think of being a police officer as a blue-collar job that pays a working-class salary, but that isn't always the case at the Austin Police Department, where some officers make double their base pay in overtime, according to a recent American-Statesman analysis.

The analysis found that the median pay for an Austin police officer is about $130,000, but more than 30 lower-rank employees made double that pay thanks to regularly working overtime hours. Lisa Davis, the Police Department's highest-ranking employee, made a $288,768 salary — none of which came from overtime. Twelve lower-ranking officers made more than Davis, the analysis shows.

Overall, the Police Department spent $52.2 million on overtime pay last year, the most of any city department. Davis has contributed the high amount of overtime usage to the department's officer shortage.

"TxDOT permanently closes two downtown Austin exits" via Spectrum News – AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced Sunday that two I-35 exits in downtown Austin are permanently closed.

According to an X post from the agency, the northbound I-35 Riverside Drive exit (233) and Holly Street entrance ramp and exit (234A) were shuttered on Sunday as part of TxDOT’s I-35 Capital Express Central Project, specifically its Lady Bird Lake Segment.

Drivers will now need to exit early using the Woodland Avenue exit (232B).

The project’s Lady Bird Lake Segment includes reconstructing Lady Bird Lake bridge, creating a new road junction at Riverside Drive and adding two HOV lanes in both directions. According to TxDOT’s website, the changes “will enhance safety and connectivity with a pedestrian-only bridge at Woodland Avenue, bike and pedestrian paths along the corridor and will accommodate future Capital Metro routes.”

Other changes and closures will occur as the project continues, including the closure of Kenwood Avenue at Riverside Drive and a trail detour along Lady Bird Lake’s north shore that will last until 2033.

"Sneak peek: Austin's 'wishbone' bridge over Lady Bird Lake opens Saturday" via KUT – Austin's long-awaited "wishbone" pedestrian bridge opens Saturday at the eastern end of Lady Bird Lake, completing the biggest gap in the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail.

For the first time since Longhorn Shores was developed in the mid-1970s, people will be able to move along this edge of the lake without being routed next to fast-moving cars and trucks.

The $25 million bridge was mostly funded by voter-approved debt authorized in the 2020 bond election. But the project wound up costing more than expected, so U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, secured more than $4 million in federal funding, allowing construction to kick off in July 2024.

Casar will speak at a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. He'll be joined by Mayor Kirk Watson, among other elected officials. The city says the grand opening will include food trucks and live music.

"Powerball ticket sold in Austin wins $1 million. Here's where it was sold" Austin American-Statesman's Marley Malenfant – A Powerball lottery player in Austin won a $1 million prize after purchasing the winning ticket at a local convenience store.

The winning numbers were 3, 8, 31, 60 and 65, with Powerball 4.

The person who purchased the ticket matched all five white balls but missed the Powerball.

According to the Texas Lottery website, the ticket was sold at a Circle K gas station located at 6107 W. Parmer Ln. in Austin.

The next drawing for Powerball is Wednesday, Feb. 4.

The estimated jackpot is $80 million with a cash value of $36.2 million.

The Powerball drawing takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

"What will a warm, sunny Austin this week mean for your allergies?" Austin American-Statesman's Mary Wasson – A warm, sunny Austin this week is the result of an amplified weather pattern across the contiguous United States, bringing record-breaking heat to the West and frigid temperatures to the East Coast.

Central Texas weather is flip-flopping as the region transitions out of last week’s cold snap and into a much warmer pattern driven by this atmospheric setup. A strong ridge of high atmospheric pressure along the West Coast is driving near-record warmth from California and Arizona north into the Pacific Northwest, while a deep trough of low pressure to the east produces snow and bitter cold from the Great Lakes to the East Coast.

Texas currently sits between these two systems, keeping temperatures near climate-normal levels for now. As the western ridge shifts east later this week, temperatures will surge, with afternoon highs climbing toward 80 degrees by the weekend. After a chilly start to Wednesday, the afternoon in Austin will be sunny and mild with highs near the climate-average of 65 degrees for Feb. 4.

Police said Julian Baez allegedly got into a verbal altercation with his two roommates before opening fire. Investigators said the suspect entered the credit union armed with a gun, showed the weapon to employees and demanded money. He left after taking what police described "as a large amount of cash."

APD, the Violent Crimes Task Force and the FBI later identified the suspect as Syntedrick Brown. Detectives said they used multiple investigative techniques and, by Saturday, Jan. 31, had gathered evidence allowing them to file charges against him.

On Monday, Feb. 2, authorities carried out a joint search warrant at Brown’s home, where police said they found a "significant amount of evidence," including stolen cash from the robbery.

Brown was arrested and remains in federal custody, police said.

Brown allegedly placed the currency in a black plastic trash bag before forcing employees into a bathroom and telling them not to leave, according to officials.

"Central Austin neighbors witness chase, crash and arrest involving ICE" via KUT – Central Austin neighbors are worried about Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a video posted on social media showed a car that crashed into the front lawn of a house after its driver tried to escape ICE. A second video shows a man detained by masked officers.

Clay Crenshaw said he heard a loud noise outside his home in the North Loop neighborhood on Monday morning. When he looked out the window, Crenshaw said he saw a car in his front yard and an armed man was looking around.

He learned that ICE had chased down a driver through his neighborhood and into his yard. The car did not crash into his house, but Crenshaw said he was upset about the immigration operation.

“There was definitely some very dangerous, inappropriately fast driving happening during this operation on a street that is usually very packed with pedestrians,” Crenshaw said. “Thankfully, there was nobody. No pedestrians were involved.”

A spokesperson with the Austin Police Department confirmed the incident happened and said none of the vehicles involved in the chase were marked as law enforcement vehicles.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT

"Austin mayor delays city efficiency audit vote for more feedback; rescheduled for Feb. 26" via KVUE – Austin Mayor Kirk Watson has delayed a vote on a key efficiency audit proposal, emphasizing careful rollout before the upcoming February meeting.

Kirk Watson has pulled the proposal for a citywide efficiency audit from Thursday’s city council agenda, delaying a vote he originally hoped would happen this week.

The proposed “Comprehensive Efficiency Assessment” ordinance would direct the city auditor to hire an outside consulting firm experienced in municipal audits to regularly evaluate how each city department operates. Under the plan, every department would be reviewed at least once every three years, with results first presented to the council’s Audit and Finance Committee and later to the full council.

In a message to council members earlier this week, Watson said he wants the rollout to be more “thoughtful” and to allow additional time for review and feedback. He plans to bring the item back for consideration at the Feb. 26 council meeting.

"Austin's social service 'reset' continues with city evaluation, further cuts ahead" Community Impact | News's Ben Thompson – Funding for Austin's social service programs is in line for further cuts, and the city is now evaluating how to both save and reduce portions of its tens of millions of dollars in annual spending.

“I know we’re just at a very challenging time as an organization, and I know these are going to be difficult decisions. But I do feel like that if we all come together, all of the community, all of one voice and all of the partners, and we all work on this together, we can get to a very good place," Assistant City Manager Stephanie Hayden-Howard said Feb. 4.

Last year, City Council originally passed a fiscal year 2025-26 budget with significant investments in social services like homelessness response, public health programming, violence interruption and resident assistance.

That added spending was backed by a tax increase presented for voter approval through Proposition Q. However, most of the funding anticipated by council was stripped away in a budget rewrite after voters rejected the tax measure.

"Austin faces diminished parks growth" Community Impact | News's Ben Thompson – Austin faces diminished parks growth Austin’s supply of parks and open spaces is often referenced as one of its most cherished amenities. But after years of population growth, it’s become more challenging to meet rising recreational needs.

The city prioritizes all residents living within 10-minute walks from a park and offering at least 24 acres of parkland per 1,000 people. Portions of city bond packages have been used to expand parkland, and Austin’s also relied on a parkland dedication system requiring developers to either pay fees or contribute land. But future acquisition funding is uncertain, especially under a new state law that slashed dedication requirements.

“Parks create community; parks are spaces for recreation, for physical health for mental health, for relief from urban life,” said Scott Grantham, Austin Parks & Recreation principal planner. “It’s going to be vital that we find a way to continue to bring parks to the people.”

City requirements on developers rose through the 2010s and early 2020s, when developers had to donate land or pay fees equivalent to 9.4 park acres per 1,000 residents.

"Austin moves to curb loud, reckless driving with new vehicle noise ordinance" Community Impact | News's Ben Thompson – City officials are looking to crack down on excessive vehicle noise and unsafe driving, particularly along west Austin's RM 2222 corridor where reports of complaints and safety issues have been surging for years.

"Our neighborhood has effectively been turned into an informal practice track, something no homeowner wants or expects," Northwest Hills resident Lisa Capps told City Council Feb. 2.

Mounting cases of loud and reckless vehicles reported along RM 2222 have prompted resident advocacy and targeted responses by the Austin Police Department. Chief Lisa Davis said vehicle noise, mainly from motorcycles concentrated in APD's Baker Sector on the west side, is a top concern.

"City of Austin Selected for Early Childhood Program with the National League of Cities" via AustinTexas.gov – The City of Austin is proud to join the Prenatal-to-Three Impact Lab, a new peer-learning cohort led by the National League of Cities. This nine-month technical assistance program aims to drive local action for the prenatal-to-three population. The initiative will focus on strategies to address key contributors to poor maternal and infant outcomes, including climate and environmental factors, family economic insecurity, and housing instability.

The City of Austin will receive technical assistance from National League of Cities to address climate and environmental factors with a project that connects city staff with early childhood experts, peer networks, tailored resources, and real-world city examples. Throughout the length of the initiative, leaders from participating cities will refine their strategic vision and develop actionable commitments on behalf of the youngest residents in their cities through collaborative cohort discussions, as well as guidance from national partners and National League of Cities staff.

"Eanes ISD to adjust staff ratios, increase local revenues ahead of 2026-27 budget" Community Impact | News's Brittany Anderson – For the past several months, Eanes ISD administration has considered various ways to garner $5 million-$6 million in cost savings or revenue generation in order to balance the fiscal year 2026-27 budget.

The board of trustees unanimously approved an optimization plan Feb. 3, which will include a revenue-generation program and staffing optimization plan to reduce a projected budget shortfall.

Some context

At the Jan. 13 board meeting, Chief Financial Officer Chris Scott presented four possible budget optimization packages for the board to consider, each with a mix of options that could net millions of dollars in savings or revenue.

"Bastrop County plans $219M in upgrades for buildings, IT and more" Community Impact | News's Joel Valley – Bastrop County adopted its Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal years 2026-31 on Jan. 29 to keep pace with a growing population.

The multiyear plan identifies immediate, short-term and long-term needs—$219 million in projects that include building and expansion, information technology upgrades, and county roads and bridges improvements, according to county documents.

“The [CIP] represents the county’s commitment to invest in our infrastructure while managing growth,” Jennifer Pacheco, county auditor, said in an email to the Bastrop County Commissioners Court. “A [collaborative] effort will ensure that capital funding will be allocated appropriately and implemented on projects that will provide the greatest benefit to the county.”

BUSINESS NEWS

"Austin-based Silicon Labs being acquired by Texas instruments in a $7.5B deal" Austin American-Statesman's Sasha Richie – Silicon Labs being acquired by Texas instruments in $7.5B deal Silicon Laboratories Inc., whose downtown offices are seen in this 2021 file photo, is being acquired by Dallas-based Texas Instruments Inc. in a $7.5 billion deal.

Texas Instruments is spending $7.5 billion to buy Austin-based tech firm Silicon Labs to extend its chips enterprise. The two companies on Wednesday announced a definitive acquisition agreement, an all-cash transaction that would grant Silicon Laboratories Inc. shareholders $231 per share, a premium of nearly 70% over Tuesday’s closing price.

The deal is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027 pending regulatory and shareholder approval.

The Austin company also reported Wednesday it narrowed its loss in the fourth quarter as revenue jumped 25%. For the full year, it recorded $784.76 million in revenue. By comparison, Texas Instruments Inc. had full-year revenue of $17.68 billion.

Silicon Labs is a fabless chip maker, meaning it designs but outsources the manufacture of semiconductors. Its focus is on wireless connectivity, producing mixed-signal chips used in smart homes, industrial applications, and other connected devices.

"St. David’s buys 6 freestanding emergency centers in Austin area" Austin American-Statesman's Nicole Villalpando – St. David's HealthCare has added six more free-standing emergency centers to the Austin area. On Sunday, it purchased Austin Emergency Center locations from Houston private equity firm ZT Corporate, which were operated under the Altus Community Healthcare portfolio.

The six emergency centers — five in Austin and one in Pflugerville — operate like St. David's seven other freestanding emergency centers. Each has a St. David's hospital that oversees it and is staffed by its emergency room doctors.

"As our population grows, local emergency rooms continue to see high patient volumes,” said David Huffstutler, president and CEO of St. David’s HealthCare, in a statement. “These acquisitions are strategically designed to ease pressure on large medical centers and expand access to high-quality emergency care closer to home for Central Texans.”
