TOP NEWS

"Austin police policy changes spark mixed reactions from residents" via KEYE – Austin police have announced changes to their policies regarding cooperation with ICE officers, prompting varied reactions from the community. Many Austinites support the adjustments, believing they better align with the city's values. Josiah Pecina, an Austin resident, expressed a desire for changes in police approaches.

"I think there can be some changes towards that and their approach with everything." He emphasized the importance of targeting criminals while protecting law-abiding people.

City Councilman Ryan Alter explained that the new policy requires officers who detain a criminal and choose to report them to ICE to first contact their supervisor and remain with the individual until they are arrested. Pecina supports continued policy changes to safeguard non-criminals.

"If the police had their structure down a little more, and if they are really criminal people that are like people who are raping children or who are thugs and everything like that. I think they have a right to do that," he said.

"Central Texas students continue walking out of class to protest ICE operations" via KEYE – Central Texas students continue walking out of class to protest ICE operations Hundreds of students walked out of classes at multiple Central Texas school districts on Monday to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.

The walkouts affected at least five school districts: Hays CISD, Manor ISD, Lockhart ISD, Pflugerville ISD, and Bastrop ISD.

Hays CISD reported several hundred students participating across five campuses: Hays High School, Live Oak Academy High School, Johnson High School, Lehman High School, and Barton Middle School. They marched to downtown Kyle.

Kyle Police said they arrested two minors; one was charged with assault on a public servant, resisting arrest, interfering with public duties, consumption, and possession of alcohol by a minor, while the other was charged with resisting arrest and interfering with public duties. The district said any student who participated in the protest will receive unexcused absences.

Students also walked out at three Manor ISD campuses, Lockhart High School, and all five Pflugerville ISD high schools, according to district officials.

The demonstrations followed similar walkouts on Friday at Austin ISD, where

"Warmer days are coming to Austin before a weak cold front" Austin American-Statesman's Justin Ballard – This map shows Austin and San Antonio's forecast high temperatures Monday and Tuesday. Ahead of a cold front, temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s are expected.

Warmer days are in Austin's forecast despite the expected arrival of a cold front.

The big questions: Will the cold front later this week bring rain, and how much cooler will it feel behind it?

Austin heats up through Tuesday

Temperatures across Central Texas have been well below normal for nearly 10 days. The average temperature in Austin during the final week of January was a chilly 37.9 degrees, making it the fifth-coldest stretch since records began in 1898.

If you're tired of cold weather, the first half of this week should bring a smile to your face. Ahead of an approaching cold front, temperatures in Austin will steadily climb. You'll notice the slightly warmer weather as early as Monday morning, with most of Central Texas only seeing lows in the middle to upper 30s. Yes, this is still cool, but highs in spite of increased cloud cover should still reach into the upper 60s.
